Eighth-graders Cassandra and Aliyah Russell of Chicago never imagined they’d be arrested in their school cafeteria, much less for throwing food.

But that’s just what happened following lunchtime mayhem last Thursday at the Perspectives Charter Middle School, south of Chicago. More than two dozen students, ages 11 to 15, were rounded up by police, arrested and charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct.

“They took us to jail, fingerprinted us, mugshotted us, or whatever, all because of a food fight…I was arrested. Handcuffs on,” 13-year-old Cassandra told ABC News.

“We were suspended, went to jail and now have to go to court,” said 14-year-old Aliyah.

The sisters’ mother, Erica, told ABC News she’s stunned.

“Who does that? Lock children up for throwing a carrot, a biscuit, milk, Jello,” she said. “Who does that?”

The Russell sisters returned to school today after finishing a three-day suspension for their part in the food fight.

So, why weren’t the students just given detention?

This fucking disgusts me. I was arrested in 8th grade for walking off school grounds in protest after my teacher gave me an F because my name counted two words over the word limit. (according to him). I argued with the teacher walked out and was stopped when a Gym teacher pulled up, and literally jumped out of his vehicle and grabbed me, resulting in bruises to my ribs and ankles (which the detention center refused to document).

I spent three months in Juvenile Detention, and Six months in Anger management after arguing with the teacher and walking out. I went in a fairly come and level-headed person and came out extremely angry and vengeful.

Afterwards I egged the park, the school, a police vehicle, and to top it off I poured sugar in the Gym teachers tank. I would have burnt his house to the ground if I knew where he lived.

Almost a year of my fucking life was taken because these assholes decided they wanted to teach me a lesson for exercising my right not be verbally or mentally abused.

Fuck them, and those fucking pigs. Fuck fuck fuck, fuckity fuck.
